Somali People and Djibouti Free Essays

Djibouti, a small 9000 square miles Horn of Africa (HOA) enclave located at the convergence of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, is strategically important to the U. S. Foreign policy. We will write a custom essay sample on Somali People and Djibouti or any similar topic only for you Order Now All instruments of U. S National Power – diplomacy, information, military and economic – are exercised as part of a deliberate and sustained ‘whole of government’ approach. The U. S. Ambassador to Djibouti, the Honorable Geeta Pasi, leads a State Department and U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Team in enabling U. S. Strategic policy vision in HOA, while enabling and collaborating with Djibouti in strengthening government, social, economic and international capabilities. Djibouti affects U. S Foreign policy in three major areas: Djibouti’s geographical location and shipping port capabilities; support for U. S Foreign Policy vision in the HOA region; support for U. S. Military operations. Djibouti’s geographical location and deep harbor port provides a strategic and economic advantage over bordering countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, by supporting international shipping and trade. Landlocked Ethiopia, the major political and economic African Union influence in the region, depends uniquely on Djibouti’s port and modern road infrastructure system (courtesy of the European Union) to receive and deliver goods internationally. The good relations between Djibouti City and Addis Ababa enable stability in the region, supporting U. S Foreign policy. Additionally, Djibouti’s location and stable government neighboring the unpredictable and radically prone countries of Eritrea, Somalia and Yemen (across the 18-mile straight) enables U. S. State Department efforts to limit the spread of state sponsored terrorism. Furthermore, Djibouti is the linchpin in the Department of State (DoS) and Department of Defense (DoD) civil-military regional efforts to strengthen institutional capabilities of East African militaries in order to promote security and stability throughout the Horn of Africa. (Economic, Diplomatic IOP) Djibouti, a country 99 percent Muslim and primarily of Somali decent, boasts a relatively stable government which remains a dependable supporter of U. S Foreign policy within HOA. Djibouti supports African Union and U. S. Foreign Policy efforts to eradicate the spread of Islamic extremists groups such as Al-Qaida affiliated al-Shabaab – this commitment includes providing military forces to the African Union Mission in Somalia, supporting the Transitional Federal Government in Mogadishu, Somalia. Additionally, the Djiboutian government supports USAID efforts throughout Africa by providing warehousing for the only stockpile of humanitarian aid on the African continent. (Diplomatic, Information IOP) Djibouti supports the only U. S Military base on the continent of Africa- it also supports French and Japanese military forces. The U. S Military installation, Camp Lemonnier, houses over 4000 Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force personnel, which includes a robust contingency of Special Operations personnel. Djibouti’s support for a U. S Military presence enables the sustained training of East African militaries, a key objective in the State Departments vision to enhance the effectiveness, capability, credibility and status of East African militaries towards civilian populations they serve. Additionally, having a U. S military presence supports and develops a wide range of military options available to the Commander in Chief during emergent/contingent operations. Finally, the Djiboutian government support of multi-national military forces provides a base of operations for the Joint Coalition Task Force addressing the piracy issue along the Somali coast. (Diplomatic, Military, Information IOPs) In conclusion, Djibouti’s demure size is a stark contrast to the importance this African nation has on U. S. Foreign Policy. With the very real presence of Islamic extremists groups in Africa, the tenuous diplomatic and tribal issues prevalent throughout the region, and the increasing encroachment and influence China imposes on African nations in search of natural resources, it is all the more important for U. S Foreign Policy, executed through DoS and DoD joint efforts, to enable African partnerships similar to what exists with Djibouti. How to cite Somali People and Djibouti, Essays

Australian Immigration Law Jurisdictional

Question: Discuss about the Australian Immigration Lawfor Jurisdictional. Answer: The term jurisdictional error is a concept that came into existence with the advent of administrative law. The concept is particularly used in United Kingdom and Australia. Jurisdiction means authority to take decisions or decide and this error takes place when the given authority to any given Court is misunderstood or misconceived[1]. However, the decisions that amount to jurisdictional error can be quashed with the help of judicial review. Some examples of judicial review include asking wrong questions to the applicant, ignoring important material to the case or relying on immaterial material thereby breaching the concept of natural justice. In the given case, the decision taken by the Tribunal in the case of Malhi v Minister for Immigration Anor [2017] FCCA 119 (2 February 2017) was a prime example of jurisdictional error in which the applicant successfully appealed against the decision of the Tribunal in the Federal Court. In the given case, the applicant named Mr. Amanpreet Singh wanted to marry a women staying and residing at Australia. The applicant was a male and an Indian. However, his sponsor was a woman and the woman was an Australian. During the time when the judicial decision was to be taken, the age of the applicant was about 26 years and of the sponsor was about 52 years[2]. In the given case, the following issues were raised: The Tribunal considered their relationship hasty and in the opinion of the Tribunal, the couple has not thought over about the potential implications of their life in future. Secondly, the Tribunal also questioned them about their been able to have biological children together or not and the consequences that their relationship might have on other people[3]. In the opinion of the Tribunal, the above-mentioned issues mattered a lot as far as issuing and granting of visas were concerned. The Tribunal had raised certain questions and was doubtful about the genuineness of their relationship as to whether they were sustaining a genuine relationship or not. In the view of Tribunal, the applicant, as he was not sure about gaining permanent residence visa in Australia, had planned to enter into a marriage with the sponsor who was of 52 years of age. The sponsor, in the opinion of the Tribunal, did not think of the consequences of their relationship in a meaningful manner. Moreover, the Tribunal was also worried about the fact that the sponsor was embarking upon their new relationship knowing of the existing complexities. The Tribunal seemed to be extremely worried that the sponsor and the applicant did not have a meaningful discussion on this previously[4]. Based on the above contentions, the Tribunal had rejected the applicant of visa of Malhi. On 20 March 2015, the applicant applied for judicial review over the decision that was passed by the Tribunal. The applicant emerged successful in his seeking judicial review and the Federal Court declared the decision of the Tribunal as a jurisdictional error based on the following points: The Tribunal failed to apply the appropriate meaning to the words continuing and genuine. Secondly, the Tribunal failed to the give sufficient amount of time to the applicant to present his arguments related to the given case that made him apply for judicial review in the given case[5]. Additionally, the Court had also observed that the examination of whether a given relationship is continuing or genuine or not is to be examined at the time when the Tribunal was making his decision instead of relying on future predictions. Therefore, in the opinion of the Court parties have the liberty to enter into the relationship of marriage for the purpose of only obtaining visa and the reasons may not be necessarily genuine. The couple have the liberty of entering into a relationship with one another which in the opinion of the third party may seem be ill conceived or precipitous. Nevertheless, the only thing that should have mattered to the Tribunal to base his judgment was that the relationship is continuing and genuine and none of these terms have been described in the legislation[6]. The Court while interpreting the meaning of the word genuine held that the relationship should not, at the time of making the decision, be false or sham in nature. Furthermore, the Court had also added to the meaning of the word continuing stating that the only thing that the Tribunal should have taken into consideration at the time of making the decision is that the couple will be able to endure a foreseeable future. There is no need for the couple to prove that their relationship will last for lifetime. Thus, it may be held that the migration law does not need the applicant to satisfy that they will be together until death do them separate. In the second issue wherein the Tribunal had raised concerns whether the parties have had a serious discussion on this in the beginning of the relationship itself is doubtful. Thus, the parties to the application should have had a seriously considered issues related to conceiving children as well. In the opinion of the Federal Court the Tribunal had made a jurisdictional error in taking such matter into serious consideration at the time of considering and approving visa for the same[7]. Based on the above discussion, it may be held that parties who wish to apply for visa and wish to get married for the same need not worry about their approval of application, as the Tribunal would only be judging their application on the ground that their relationship is continuing at the time of application. The Tribunal need not take into consideration the continuity of a relationship on the grounds of romanticism. Moreover, based on the decision of the Federal Court it may also be concluded that parties who wish to get their visa permanent can marry another only for the purpose of getting their visa permanent. This decision of the Federal Court paved way for many application of permanent visa to be approved. References: Aleinikoff, T. Structure of the Healthcare Industry Essay Example

Structure of the Healthcare Industry Paper Health care is one of the fastest growing section of the economy, and differs from other services in various ways (Danzon, 1992). The output of a bakery is bread but the output of the health care industry is less detailed or defined. The health care industry is changeable and unpredictable, making it less understood by both producers/suppliers and consumers (Danzon, 1992). However, the health care industry still operates within the basic rules of economics, and economical analysis is required in assessing public policy (Danzon, 1992).   The end product of medical care is, of course, health. Probabilities on health can only be applied and quantified before care is actually provided (Danzon, 1992). In the U.S., the market for health insurance is influenced by the fact that employer contributions are an integral part of employee compensation which is tax-exempt (Danzon, 1992). Thus, third party payment affects the basic structure of the health care industry (Danzon, 1992). Because insurance companies pay for a large percentage of medical care, a consumer’s â€Å"point-of-purchase† price has to be less. If a physician charges $20 and the insurance company pays for 80% for the charge, then the consumer’s price is on $4 . Like any other market, the quantity demanded goes up when price goes down. It is hard to measure quality of service based on the effect of insurance (Danzon). The presence of a particular government is heavily felt in the health care industry. In the U.S., the largest health insurer is Medicare or Medicaid (Danzon, 1992). Increase in Health Care Costs Health care costs have rapidly increased in recent years, mainly because of fast trends in medical technology (Danzon, 1992). Nevertheless, an effective resource allocation ensures that the medical benefits exceed marginal costs (Danzon, 1992). Hospitals play a major role in the health care industry (Danzon, 1992). Medicare implemented a â€Å"prospective payment system† in 1983, under which hospitals are paid a fixed charge per admission, basing on the diagnosis of a patient. This way, the hospital shoulders the partial cost of all expenses incurred by the patient. Physicians also play a major role in the health care industry (Danzon, 1992). The actual number of doctors who are active in providing care for patients have more than doubled (Danzon, 1992). This increase may be attributed to medical schools’ responses to federal subsidies created to multiply the supply of doctors after the entrance of Medicare and Medicaid (Danzon, 1992). In most markets, increases in supply would result in lower prices, and thus, a higher quantity. However, many doctors have relocated to rural areas that were otherwise unserved. There is a persistent connection between number of doctors per capita, and the prevalence of home-visits and surgical procedures. Another influence in the Health care industry is pharmaceutical trends. U.S. prescription of drugs grew by 16.9% in 2001 compare to 2000, making the pharma industry a $172 billion industry (Boyle, 2002).

welcome to disneys world essays

welcome to disneys world essays Disneyland, Disney World, and Euro Disney sound like magical places, places that conjure up only fond memories and images of the true American culture. Disney has taken this culture to all corners of the world showing the wonders of our great society, right? Disneys movies are some of the top grossing films, the toys are selling off the shelves, and if you look at bus full of preschoolers, a large number of them are bound to be wearing a piece of clothing donning a Disney character. The hand of Disney has grabbed hold of our children, but what do we really know about this stranger? Disney is a large multi-national corporation with its eye on financial success. This success drives this company to exploit the resources and people of other nations while maintaining an image that is respected within the American society. Not only does Disney exploit other cultures, it also produces films, supposedly idealizing American values, that consistently contain racism, sexism, homophobia , and ethnocentrism thereby exploiting our own. Sweat-shops are not a new issue in international business. We, as North Americans, have become painfully aware of the exploitation taking place in numerous counties. However, it is more disturbing when a corporation that has established itself on its values and a commitment to children is paying twelve years old girls seven cents in developing countries an hour to make pajamas for twelve year olds in North America. The hypocrisy in this situation is painful. A company that is teaching our children values is practicing business transactions that are immoral and unethical. Corporate Watch revealed on their website that in Thailand, Disney contractor The Eden Group, fired 1,145 of their own workers in order to take advantage of lower cost subcontractors, 10 of which were found to employ child labor. It was also shown that Disney is supporting the Burmese military dictato...

Overview of the DoD Procurement Process

Overview of the DoD Procurement Process The Defense Department procurement process can be confusing and complicated. There are a variety of contract types – each with its own pluses and minuses. The regulations can be daunting since they seem to be the size of the tax code. The competition for contracts can be fierce. There is a lot of paperwork. But Defense contracting can be profitable and rewarding. Defense Department purchases typically begin at one of three points: sole source procurementprocurement under an existing multiple award contractnormal procurement Sole Source Procurements Sole source procurements are made when there is only one company that can fulfill the contract. This procurement is rare and must be documented very well by the government. You are more likely to get a sole source procurement once you have some government contracts and have an open contract vehicle available. Multiple Award Contracts Procurements under an existing multiple award contract are becoming much more common. Multiple award contracts (MAC) such as GSA schedules, Navy Seaport-e, and Air Force NETCENTS II involve companies obtaining a contract and then compete for task orders. Only those companies with a multiple award contract can compete for the task orders and task orders are the work. MAC’s are valuable since the number of companies that can compete for the resulting task orders is much smaller. The process for obtaining a MAC is similar to acquisitions over $25,000 discussed below. One type of multiple award contracts is Broad Agency Announcements or BAAs. BAAs are solicitations issued by an agency when it seeks basic research work. Topics of interest are presented and companies and universities submit proposals with possible solutions needing funding. Normal Procurements Normal procurement is split between simplified acquisitions (those below $25,000) and all the rest. Simplified Acquisitions Simplified acquisitions are purchases under $25,000 and require the government purchasing agent to obtain quotes either orally or through a brief written quote. Then a purchase order is issued to the lowest responsible bidder. The Navy says that 98% of their transactions are below $25,000 meaning there are billions of dollars available to small companies. Simplified acquisitions are not advertised so to get these contracts you have to get in front of the purchasing people so they will call and get a quote from you. Purchases Over $25,000 Purchases over $25,000 are publicized on the Federal Business Opportunities website. On this website, you will find Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for practically everything the government purchases. Review the RFP summaries carefully and when you find one of interest download the RFP documents. Read the documents very carefully and write a proposal in response and in complete compliance with the RFP documents. Make sure you know when the proposal is due and get your proposal submitted before the due date and time. Late proposals are rejected. Proposals are evaluated by the government according to the procedures listed in the RFP. Sometimes there may be questions asked but not always. Most of the time the decision is made based solely on your proposal so be sure everything is in it or you may lose the opportunity. Once you are awarded the contract, a contracting officer will send you a letter and contact you to negotiate a contract. If negotiations go well a contract will be finalized. Some purchases will not require negotiations so the government will issue you a purchase order. Be sure you read all documents carefully and fully understand what they mean. Contracting with the Defense Department can be complicated – better to know what you are agreeing to than finding out after signing a legally binding contract. It is now time to complete the contract and obtain more work.

Advertisement in India - Essay Example So McDonald’s decided to project itself as a food that caters for and addresses the needs of the â€Å"Indian† population. â€Å"McDonalds wanted to position itself as Indian and a promoter of family values and culture, as well as being comfortable and easy. Simultaneously, the brand wanted to communicate that, operationally, it was committed to maintaining a quality service, cleanliness and offering value for money† (Chaturvedi, n.d.). From the standpoint of marketing communications, McDonald’s directed its attention on developing a familiarity of the customers with its brand. McDonald’s did not use much of mass media like advertising on television in India until the start of the 21st century. Till then, the marketing efforts of McDonald’s paid emphasis on designing of the outlets, opening of new restaurants, and customization of its menus to the standards of Indian food. McDonald’s India primarily got success in India through strateg ic advertising meant to develop the customers’ familiarity with the brand as well as use of traditional Indian spices on the typical McDonald’s meals. Brindage Act 1902 Essay Example for Free

Brindage Act 1902 Essay 1.The Brindage Act 1902 that was implemented on November 12,1902, prohibits the Filipinos to form or join groups against the US government. The Act was created in order to pacify the Filipinos so that it would be easier for the American government to execute their plans for the country. This law states that whoever continues to revolt against the Americans will be considered as thieves. Even though Americans tried to stop the activists, there were still some Filipinos like Macario Sakay that remained fighting. They were affected greatly by the law, because they cannot walk streets without getting themselves arrested. And although they had the rich people funding them from the beginning, it was stop, therefore it led to the lack of food and arms. The bandoleros continued fighting even though some of their fellow Katipuneros surrendered to the US. I consider them heroes and patriots even though it is said that the country is in a â€Å"peaceful situation†, because they were fighting for the independence they fought since the Spanish times. 2.The First Philippine Republic or the Malolos Republic was established along with the proclamation of the Malolos Constitution. This was said to be the end of the Spanish rule. First President Emilio Aguinaldo changed the revolutionary government to a dictatorial and later went back to the revolutionary government. Malolos Republic has its President, Cabinet Members and Ministers, but in my opinion, it is still premature. The departments are messed up like the Department of Foreign Affairs, Navy and Commerce; Department of War and Public Works; Department of Police, Internal Order, Justice, Education and Hygiene; Department of Finance, Manufacturing Industry. It’s as if it was hastened just so they could form departments. I also believe that if this was a successful government, it would last longer, and the Americans could have let go of us to be an independent country.

Death penalty Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Fifty years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the trend towards worldwide abolition of the death penalty is unmistakable. When the Declaration was adopted in 1948, eight countries had abolished the death penalty for all crimes; today, as of November 1998, the number stands at 63. More than half the countries in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice, and the numbers continue to grow. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty as a violation of fundamental human rights - the right to life and the right not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. Both of these rights are recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, other international and regional human rights instruments and national constitutions and laws. Defense of life and defense of the state may be held to justify, in some cases, the taking of life by state officials; for example, when law-enforcement officials must act immediately to save their own lives or those of others or when a country is engaged in armed conflict. Even in such situations the use of lethal force is surrounded by internationally accepted standards of human rights and humanitarian law to inhibit abuse. The death penalty, however, is not an act of defense against an immediate threat to life. It is the premeditated killing of a prisoner for the purpose of punishment - a purpose that can be met by other means. The cruelty of the death penalty is manifest not only in the execution but in the time spent under sentence of death, during which the prisoner is constantly contemplating his or her own death at the hands of the state. This cruelty cannot be justified, no matter how cruel the crime of which the prisoner has been convicted. The cruelty of the death penalty extends beyond the prisoner to the prisoner's family, to the prison guards and to the officials who have to carry out an execution. Information from various parts of the world shows that the role of an executioner can be deeply disturbing, even traumatic. The right to life and the right not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment are the two human rights most often cited in debates about the death penalty. But the death penalty also attacks other rights. In many cases prisoners are sentenced to death in trials which do not conform to int... ...ting the public on the uncertainty of the deterrent effect of capital punishment. A better public understanding of crime prevention and criminal justice would produce more support for anti-crime measures which are genuine and not merely palliative. At the very least, politicians should not make demagogic calls for the death penalty, misleading the public and obscuring the need for genuine anti-crime measures. Often the national debate on the death penalty is conducted in purely national terms. The international dimension needs to be brought in. Countries can learn from other countries' experience. Over the centuries, laws and public attitudes relating to torture have evolved. It is no longer permissible to use thumbscrews or the rack as legally sanctioned means of interrogation and punishment. Attitudes toward the death penalty are also changing, and bringing about abolition requires courageous political leadership, leadership that will be exercised in the defense of human rights. The requirement of respect for human rights has to include the abolition of the death penalty. It is not possible for a government to respect human rights and retain the death penalty at the same time.

Control Process in Management

†¢ Home †¢ About Site †¢ Preserve Your Article †¢ Content Quality Guidelines †¢ Disclaimer †¢ TOS †¢ Contact Us †¢ Skip to content 4 main steps in control process in management 4 main steps in control process in management are: Control as a management function involves the following steps: 1. Establishing standards: Standards are criteria against which results are measured. They are norms to achieve the goals. Standards are usually measured in terms of output. They can also be measured in non-monetary terms like loyalty, customer attraction, goodwill etc. Some of the standards are as. a. Time standards: The goal will be set on the basis of time lapse in performing a task. b. Cost standards: These indicate the financial expenditures involved per unit, e. g. material cost per unit, cost per person, etc. c. Income standards: These relate to financial rewards received due to a particular activity like sales volume per month, year etc. d. Market shar e: This relates to the share of the company's product in the market. e. Productivity: Productivity can be measured on the basis of units produced per man hour etc. f. Profitability:These goals will be set with the consideration of cost per unit, market share, etc. 2. Measuring performance Measurement involves comparison between what is accomplished and what was intended to be accomplished. The measurement of actual performance must be in the units similar to those of predetermined criterion. The unit or the yardstick thus chosen be clear, well-defined and easily identified, and should be uniform and homogenous throughout the measurement process. The performance can be measured by the following steps: (a) Strategic control points: It is not possible to check everything that is being done. Feature article about  Production ManagementSo it is necessary to pick strategic control points for measurement. Some of these points are: (i) Income: It is a significant control point and must be as much per unit of time as was expected. If the income is significantly off form the expectation then the reasons should be investigated and a corrective action taken. (ii) Expenses: Total and operational cost per unit must be computed and must be adhered to. Key expense data must be reviewed periodically. (iii) Inventory: Some minimum inventory of both the finished product as well as raw materials must be kept in stock as a buffer.Any change in inventory level would determine whether the production is to be increased or decreased. (iv) Quality of the product: Standards of established quality must be maintained especially in food processing, drug manufacturing, automobiles, etc. The process should be continuously observed for any deviations. (v) Absenteeism: Excessive absenteeism of pers onnel is a serious reflection on the environment and working conditions. Absenteeism in excess of chance expectations must be seriously investigated. (b) Meclzanised measuring devices:This involves a wide variant of technical instruments used for measurement of machine operations, product â€Å"quality for size and ingredients and production processes. These instruments may be mechanical, electronic or chemical in nature. (c) Ratio analysis: Ratio analysis is one of the most important management tools. It describes the relationship of one business variable to another. The following are some of the important ratios: i) Net sales to working capital: The working capital must be utilised adequately. If the inventory turnover is rapid then the same working capital can be used again and again.Hence for perishable goods, this ratio is high. Any change in ratio will signal a deviation from the norm. ii) Net sales to inventory: The greater the turnover of inventory, generally, the higher th e profit on investment. iii) Current ratio: This is the ratio of current asset (cash, receivables etc. ) to current liabilities, and is used to determine a firm's ability to pay the short term debts. iv) Net profits to net sale: This ratio measures the short-run profitability of a business. v) Net profits to tangible net worth: Net worth is the difference between tangible assets (not good will, etc) and total liabilities. This ratio of net worth is used to measure profitability over a long period. vi) Net profits to net working capital: The net-working capital is the operating capital at hand. This would determine the ability of the business to finance day-to-day operations. vii) Collection period on credit sales: The collection period should be as short as possible. Any deviation from established collection period should be promptly investigated. viii) Inventory to net working capital: This ratio is to determine the extent of working capital tied up in inventory.Generally, this rati o should be less than 80 per cent, ix) Total debt to tangible net worth: This ratio would determine the financial soundness of the business. This ratio should remain as low as possible. (d) Comparative statistical analysis: The operations of one company can be usefully compared with similar operations of another company or with industry averages. It is a very useful performance measuring device. (e) Personal observation: Personal observation both formal and informal can be used in certain situation as a measuring device for performances, specially, the performance of the personnel. The informal observation is generally a day-to-day routine type. A manager may walk through a store to have a general idea about how people are working. 3. Comparing the actual performance with expected performance This is the active principle of the process. The previous two, setting the goals and the measurement format are the preparatory parts of the process. It is the responsibility of the management t o compare the actual performance against the standards established. This comparison is less complicate if the measurement units for the standards et and the performance measured are the same and quantified. The comparison becomes more difficult when these require subjective evaluations Ralph C. Davis identifies four phases in the comparison. 1. Receiving the raw data. 2. Accumulation, classification and recording of this information. 3. Periodic evaluation of completed action to date. 4. Reporting the status of accomplishment to higher line authority. At the third phase, deviations if any are noted between standards and performance. If clear cut deviations are there, then management must study the:- (i) Causes for deviation ii) Effect of deviation (iii) Size of deviation (iv) Positive or negative deviation. 4. Correcting Deviations: The final element in the process is the taking corrective action. Measuring and comparing performance, detecting shortcomings, failures or deviations, f rom plans will be of no avail if it does point to the needed corrective action. Thus controlling to be effective, should involve not only the detection of lapses but also probe into the failure spots, fixation of responsibility for the failures at the right quarters, recommendation of the best possible teps to correct them. These corrective actions must be applied when the work is in progress. The primary objective should be avoidance of such failures in future. The required corrective action can be determined from the qualified data as per the standards laid out and the performance evaluation already done. This step should be taken promptly, otherwise losses may be cumulative and remedial action will be all the more difficult to take. Corrective action must be well balanced, avoiding over controlling and at the same time letting not things to drift. You May Also Like: †¢ 3 Elements of an Organisation suggested by Allen †¢ 14 principles of management suggested by Fayol Adve rtisement Free Subscription Top of Form [pic][pic] Do you want some more information on this topic? Purpose of Education in Society Essay

Outline the functionalist view on the role and purpose of education in society Functionalists argue that education has three broad functions. Education teaches that solidarity and skills are required by a modern industrial society. Solidarity is being together, treating people fairly and going with the norms and values of society and stop discrimination, without it there would be a state of chaos where there are no rules. In order to prepare yourself for work you need the skills provision to help achieve your goal. These may be general skills that everyone need such as literacy and numeracy or the specific skills needed for the particular occupation. As the division of labour increases in complexity and occupational roles become more specialised, increasingly longer periods in education becomes necessary. You also need socialisation and meritocracy to maintain society by teaching young people the key cultural values, such as achievement, competition, equality of opportunities, social solidarity, democracy and religious morality. Parsons stated that education ‘bridges the gap between the family and the wider society’ – this is also seen in secondary socialisation where we are taught the universalistic standards which are judgments based on universally agreed principles, which is seen differently in particularistic standards which are judgments based on an exclusive view of a particular group. Socialising children to adapt the meritocratic view of achievement is when and individual has achieved something on their own with their own talent and ability. Functionalists also say school is a miniature of society as young people are expected to follow some norms and values within the school which is then applied to the real world. They are also both meritocratic and believe in an achieved status- which is working to grasp your goal with your own talent and ability which can move you up or down the social class ladder and gives social mobility. Functionalists disagree with having an ascribed status which is being born into a social class which could mean you wouldn’t have to work for anything as everything is already there for you. Davis and Moore are functionalists and believe that education is important for role allocation. This allocates people to the most suitable jobs for their talent; it does this through exams and qualifications. Education allows you to sort people into future work roles- some people are more talented than others- some work requires more skills than others. More talented students will eventually be rewarded by being allocated to these job roles. The human capital theory shows that a meritocratic education system is the best way to develop a skilled workforce to create a strong economy and higher living standards

Child And Youth Care Work Essay Example

Child And Youth Care Work Essay Example Child And Youth Care Work Essay Child And Youth Care Work Essay Introduction The profession of kid and young person attention requires a great sum of attempt, finding and accomplishment. Within the field, kid and young person attention workers are expected to get and continue a swearing bond with the young person involved ( Quinn, 2004: 18 ) . Although the chief purpose of the kid and young person attention worker is to care for, love, and protect the kid, this may turn out hard in many fortunes. Therefore, the young person attention worker needs to hold acquired accomplishments in order to get the better of these challenges while still wining in constructing a strong relationship with the kid involved. This essay will discourse the elements of kid and young person attention work every bit good as the outlooks of kid and young person attention workers. In peculiar, it will concentrate on the accomplishments needed within the profession and the troubles faced when seeking to care for kids and young person. Elementss of Child and Youth Care Maier ( 1987 ) describes the nucleus elements of kid and young person attention work as supplying kids with physical comfort, cognizing the different dispositions of each kid, rhythmic interactions with kids, predictability, dependableness and besides behavioral preparation. When practising within the field of kid and young person attention, the worker is required to hold an apprehension of these elements in order to make their work to the best of their ability. More specifically, the elements of kid and young person attention includes carry throughing the physical and privateness demands of the kids and besides cognizing the differences in their dispositions, in other words, cognizing the differences in their personalities and attitudes. Besides, the kid attention worker needs to do clip for rhythmic interactions with the patient so that they can both hold an experience of intimacy.e.g. vocalizing or dance ( Maier, 1987 ) . Childs have a strong demand for predictability, and rhythmic interactions besides play a function in this. â€Å"Rhythmic activities seem to corroborate the experience of repeat and continuity of repetition† which, as a consequence, provides the kid with a feeling of enduring committedness and predictability. Children and youth necessitate to cognize that they have a dependable grownup to depend on. Lastly, kid and young person attention workers need to add in a personal component to the behavioral preparation of their patients. Children by and large learn quicker from those who have intending to them and hence will larn more readily from their care-giver one time attention has been established ( Maier, 1987 ) . Expectations and Skills Required The chief function of a kid and young person attention worker is to work with kids and young person in ways that are educative, participative and authorising. The worker is expected to promote equality of chance and societal inclusion amongst the kids that they are working with ( Pittman, 2004: 90 ) . Communication plays an of import function within the profession of kid and young person attention. Workers are required to make and keep relationships of trust with the kids and young person involved and should present information so that it is received in the mode intended. Child and youth attention workers need to pass on good and convey and explicate information assertively and â€Å"in linguistic communication of the community† ( Quinn, 2004: 18 ) . Child and youth attention workers are besides expected to implement programmes which aid the kids and young person in their growing, larning and development. In order to make this, workers are required to hold knowledge on group work and should cognize how to help groups in times of demand. Child and youth attention workers should continuously be be aftering and implementing new activities for kids to take part in. While making this, the patients should be motivated and encouraged to prosecute in these activities ( Quinn, 2004: 18 ) . In order to demo regard for the household of the kid and the community in which they reside, it is critical that the worker additions an apprehension of the household civilization and constructions ( Quinn, 2004: 19 ) . This will let workers to cover with struggles easier as they will so be more sensitive when keeping treatments on certain subjects and will therefore be-able to make relevant schemes in order to fulfill the kid s demands. Child and youth attention workers should demo a high degree of apprehension of kids and should be able to â€Å"recognise demand for intervention† so that they can assist with the kid s job with immediateness. Troubles in the Field Supplying good kid attention means â€Å"providing kids with important control and giving them antiphonal nurturance† ( Cancian, 2002:65 ) . However, it may be hard to transport out good kid attention efficaciously at times. Troubles in the field may include communicating jobs like non being sensitive or important plenty. Bing in the profession involves a batch of emphasis as it is a challenge to care for kids and young person and to accomplish a professional image amongst society for the kid and young person attention profession. It is besides disputing in the fact that it requires us to be flexible in alterations that may happen. Child and youth attention workers need to be willing to turn and larn from good and bad experiences in the profession and therefore prevent certain bad facets from happening in the hereafter, which may turn out hard for people who do non like alteration and who do nt take bad experience and unfavorable judgment lightly. Decision It is concluded that the kid and young person attention profession involves supplying kids with basic and indispensable demands such as love, attention and protection. Child attention workers need to pass on efficaciously with the kids in order to expeditiously assist with their jobs and set up a trusting relationship with their patients so that proper attention can be given. However, the profession does supply a few challenges but none which can non be overcome with clip and more experience in the field of kid and young person attention. Mentions Cancian, F.M. The 9 Reasons You Miss ACT Science Questions

The 9 Reasons You Miss ACT Science Questions SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips No one likes to make mistakes. However, you cannot ignore the questions you miss, or you will not improve. In this article, I will help you figure out the mistakes you are making on ACT Science questions, and I will give you some ACT Science tips and ACT Science strategies to fix your mistakes. Here are the 9 reasons you're missing ACT Science Questions: Misreading the visuals Not understanding a trend Not understanding the setup of the experiment Misreading the passage Not knowing a science fact Calculation error Careless error Not understanding a viewpoint Not understanding how viewpoints are related I've developed these core reasons after many hours of tutoring students on the ACT Science section. I'll go into more detail on each reason below. Reason #1: Misreading the Visuals This is one of the most common mistakes since it's easy to do, and it applies to a lot of questions in ACT Science. If you read our article on the 3 types of ACT science passages, this mistake is usually connected to factual questions, calculating questions, and interpreting experiments questions. Did you not read the graphs, tables, scatterplots or diagrams correctly? If so, what did you misread? What did you not understand? Make sure to drill this skill, as it is the most tested on the ACT Science section. Here is an ACT Science practice question, more specifically an example of a factual question: There are several mistakes you can make when misreading graphs. Did you look at the wrong figure entirely? Example: Did you accidentally use the top graph of the percent of captured finches from Island A? You should have used the two bottom graphs that covered the percent of captured finches from Island B and C. Did you misread the values along the x: Did you think it said 8 instead of 10? Did you misread the labels along the x: Did you think beak depth was measured along the y-axis? Did you not notice a key? Example: Many visuals will have a key with them. Keys are usually very important. Do not ignore them. You'll recognize these mistakes when your answer choice is very different from the correct answer. If you think you may have misread the visual, start by analyzing the question. Did it refer to a specific figure? Did you look at Figure 2 when it said Figure 1? If it did not refer to a specific figure in the question, did the answer choices have numbers? For example, in question 1 above, the answers A, B, C, and D all have numbers: 8 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, etc. If the answer choices contain numbers, it is a safe bet that you either needed to read a visual or understand a trend to answer the question correctly. I'll explore understanding a trend mistakes next. ACT Science Tip: If You Think You Struggle to Understand Visuals, You Need to Focus on Improving This Skill Since It Is the Most Tested Skill on the ACT Science Section. In order to improve, I'd recommend taking a few untimed ACT Science sections. Take as much time as you need to answer each question and dissect the visuals provided. Write out the control and variable(s). Write out the values at each data point. By doing this seemingly tedious step, you will be making sure you understand the information the visual is trying to convey. Also, read how to read graphs, tables and data. After reaching an acceptable score when taking untimed sections, I'd start taking timed sections immediately. You'll need to nail the 5-minute per passage timing to succeed on the ACT Science section. There are other reasons connected to data that you miss questions: Reason #2: Not Understanding a Trend If you read our article on the 3 types of ACT science passages, this mistake is usually connected to interpreting trends questions and calculations questions. Were you not able to describe the relationship of the data? Increasing, decreasing, direct, indirect? Here is an ACT Science practice question, more specifically an example of an interpreting trends question: Answering this question requires understanding what caused small seeds or large seeds to be more abundant. In this case, this graph below and the two sentences directly above it provide the information you need. If you misread the graph or mixed up these sentences, you may have gotten the answer wrong. According to the two sentences, small seeds are abundant during wet years. According to the graph, 1984 was a wet year, so J. 1984 is the correct answer. ACT Science Tip: I'd Recommend the Same Approach to Fixing This Problem As With Misreading the Visuals. Take untimed practice sections. Try to draw on the visuals the extrapolation of the data. Draw the line as if it went out further. Follow the table. Put up and down arrows for if the data is going up from point to point or down from point to point. Once you start excelling at these interpreting trends and calculations questions, go back to the 5-minute per passage pace. Understanding trends is key, but you need to understand the experiment to answer in order to answer several questions, which we will discuss next: Reason #3: Not Understanding the Setup of the Experiment If you read our article on the 3 types of ACT science passages, this mistake is usually connected to experimental design/research intent questions and hypothetical experimental questions. Did you not understand the researcher’s intent? Did you not understand the experiment’s design? Did you not know the control versus variables? Here is an ACT Science practice question, more specifically an example of an experimental design question: Answering this question requires understanding what the titrant and sample solution were. In this case, the passage defines what a titrant is and what a sample solution is, but if you misread the passage, it's easy to mix it up, especially since it's just a bunch of liquid being mixed together anyway. Be sure to skim the passage for this information if you cannot figure it out from the visuals alone. Again, I would recommend slowing down, taking untimed sections. Make sure you read the passage carefully, and then, once you get to a better score, work on the timing. If you still need help figuring out the variables in an experiment or understanding the scientist’s intent, read our article on experimental design questions. In order to understand the experimental design, you need to read the passage carefully, which bring us to our next reason: Reason #4: Misreading the Passage Did you miss key information from the passage needed to answer the questions? Make sure you read carefully. If you are not 100% sure what the answer is, go back and skim if you have the time. Try to be 100% sure before you move on to the next question. Regarding the question in Reason #2, it would be easy to misread the two sentences you need to answer the question correctly. If you were reading too quickly, you may think that the small seeds were abundant during dry years and answer incorrectly. ACT Science Tip: Take Your Time and Make Sure You Understand What You Read, so You Get the Correct Answer. Again, try taking untimed sections. Circle and underline key information as you read the passage to make sure you do not misread it. Sometimes reading the passage and visuals to answer the questions is just not enough. There are rare cases where you need outside knowledge to answer the question. Reason #5: Not Knowing a Science Fact If you read our article on the only actual science you need to know for ACT Science, this mistake is on those questions. These questions only appear about 4 times per test and require outside science knowledge. To make sure the mistake is because of a lack of outside knowledge, re-read the entire passage and make sure they do not give you the information you need to answer the question. If you still think it is an outside knowledge question, make a flashcard with the information you didn’t know. Below is an ACT Science practice question, more specifically an example of a question that requires outside knowledge: The question expects you to know that protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged, like charges repel each other, and opposite charges attract each other. Nowhere in the passage is this property of charges stated- you just have to know this from your science class experience. Knowing what you do, you can eliminate F and H. In this case, the passage stated the reaction uses protons, so the answer is G. ACT Science Tip: Study the Flashcards, so You Get the Scientific Information Down. You should make flashcards for all of the topics from the only actual science article and drill yourself. Also, be sure to do some additional light research to refresh your memory of that concept. It is not necessary to read a book on the subject, but just be sure you have a basic understanding of the concept. Because there are 13 topics mentioned in that article and only around 4 used per practice test, it is possible you may not come across all of them in your studies. You do not want to be surprised the day of the test, so make flashcards and make sure you know them! NOTE: Knowing this material is the only way to get a score between 31 and 36. If you are aiming for a score of 30 or below on the ACT Science section, you do not need to spend as much time focused on these questions, since they only account for about 4 questions per test. In addition to outside science knowledge, you need some basic math knowledge to answer certain questions. If your math skills are off, you may miss questions for this reason: Reason #6: Calculation Error These errors are only on Calculation Questions, in which you need to use math to answer the question. You are not allowed to use a calculator on the ACT Science section, so make sure you are still able to do basic math in your head. Did you make a small calculation error in question that requires basic math? Did you do the wrong math calculation? Find the average incorrectly? Here is an ACT Science practice question, more specifically an example of a calculations question: For this question, you need to interpolate (fancy word for find the in between numbers). You need to find the value of average change in AGTB at 75 m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing. After examining the scatterplot, I see there are points marked at 70 and 80 m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing, but not at 75 m, this gap in data is what makes this an interpolation question! You have the data that surround the point, but you need to figure out what the point is. What mathematical calculation could you do (using the data you do have) to find the approximate average change in AGTB at 75 m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing? Perhaps, averaging the average change in AGTB for 70 m and 80 m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing? At 70m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing, the average change in AGTB is about -3.1. At 80m from the center of the plot to the nearest clearing, the average change in AGTB is -2.2. Now, calculate using the average formula: Sum of the values / (divided by) the number of values: ((-2.2) + (-3.1)) / 2 = -5.2 / 2 = -2.6 Then, compare it to the answer choices. So, the answer is G. It would be easy to make a small mathematical error here. Did you subtract instead of add? Did you multiply instead of divide? ACT Science Tip: Make Sure You Apply the Correct Calculation (Typically Average Formula) and That You Didn’t Make Any Sort of Careless Math Mistake. Which leads us to our next topic: Reason #7: Careless Error Did you misread the question? Did you not see a NOT or EXCEPT? Make sure to read the questions closely and circle or underline the NOT or EXCEPT so you don’t miss it. It would be very easy to read this too fast and think the question is asking which of the following is true. I have watched many of the students I tutor make that mistake, and I have made that mistake myself. Try to read carefully to avoid these careless mistakes. ACT Science Tip: Circle the NOT or EXCEPT to Make Sure You Do Not Forget It. The next two reasons are from the Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. Read more about this type of passage in the 3 types of ACT Science passages article. Reason #8: Not Understanding the Point of View If you read our article on the 3 types of ACT Science passages, this mistake is usually connected to understanding of viewpoints questions. NOTE: This mistake will only occur on the Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. ACT Science Tip: If You Continue to Struggle With These Types of Question, Circle and/or Underline As You Read the Passage to Make Sure You Remember the Point of View of Each Student/Scientist. What is their argument? What do they believe? Write yourself a three word or fewer summary after reading the paragraph i.e. â€Å"pro-comet theory,† â€Å"anti-comet theory.† Answering this question requires understanding Student 2's point of view. In this case, Student 2 said that Algol B became a part of the Algol system because Algol B intersected orbits with the original Algol system. So, the original Algol system exerted a gravitational force on Algol B. Therefore, the answer is H. If you did not understand Student 2's argument, then you would get this question wrong. There is only one other kind of mistake you can make on the Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. Reason #9: Not Understanding the Differences and Similarities in the Points of View If you read our article on the 3 types of ACT science passages, this mistake is usually connected to comparing viewpoints questions. NOTE: This mistake will only occur on the Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. Were you able to differentiate between the two scientists/students? How were their viewpoints similar? Answering this question requires understanding both Scientist 1's and Scientist 2's point of view and knowing the similarities between them. In this case, both agreed the object exploded at 8 km above the Earth, so we can eliminate B, C, and D. Therefore, the answer is A. If you did not know this key similarity between them, you probably would have answered incorrectly. Canadian public economics policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Canadian public economics policy - Essay Example Government spending has been used to determine the size of a government because it constitutes a large part of GDP, such that increasing it will effectively increase GDP. Furthermore, because government spending increases inflation as a result of increased money supply; increases deficits by choosing not to increase revenues vis--vis spending; and increases debts by choosing to borrow funds to finance spending, it makes a logical measure of the size of government.
